Browsealoud is a web site speech enabling service offered by TextHELP Systems Limited, which makes web content accessible to anyone with reading difficulties. It is designed to be simple to use and requires only for you to download the FREE software. The software works by simply scrolling your mouse over the text that you want to read (it also reads menus and hyperlinks to ease navigation). Users have a choice of voice, pitch and speed.
The software is Microsoft Certified and should work on any PC that runs Windows and has Internet Explorer 4.0 upwards or Netscape Navigator.
An increasing number of organisations have enabled their own web sites with Browsealoud, including; the BBC, Yahoo, Google, Disability Rights Commission and some local authorities.
To get this software all you have to do is go to TextHELP's web site and download it for FREE by clicking on the logo below.
Our site has been simply designed to enable easy navigation and avoids the use of complex linkages or graphics.
The default font is Arial, font size 14 (although this can be varied by altering your browser settings - see below).
The site colour scheme of black text on a pale yellow background was chosen to provide a good quality contrast, although you could select your own preferred colours via your browser (Tools/Internet Options/Accessibility for Internet Explorer or Edit/Preferences/Appearance for Netscape Navigator).
You can change the text size displayed on your monitor depending on which Browser you're using.
In Internet Explorer, click on the View menu and select Text Size. Choose your preferred size from the list. The change should affect all web sites and remain the same until you decide to change it again.
In Netscape, select Edit from the Menu bar, then Select Preferences, then select Appearance. To change the text style and size, select Font. The font size and text type can be changed here.
